March and April 2018 Staffing Trends
Data for March and April 2018 staffing trends is explored below from the ASA and BLS sources. Both sources show positive continued growth.
The American Staffing Index continued to show signs of growth in March. In fact, the week of March 12th through the 18th had its best reading in 10 years. The staffing index reached a value of 95. The four-week moving average was again a 10-year high for the same period. It remained at 94. Comparing year-to-year data showed that the same period ending on March 18th was 1.3% higher.
April showed strong growth as well. Since the beginning of the ASA Staffing Index in 2006, the week of April 9th through the 15th had its strongest rounded value of 96. This time period increased 1.2%. The ASA Staffing Index reported the four-week period ending April 15 was 1.6% higher compared to the same time period the year before. The four-week moving average ended at 95.
Bureau of Labor Statistics Economic News Release March and April 2018
The BLS reports on employees on nonfarm payrolls by industry sector and selected industry details in the economic news release. Numbers are reported in the thousands and are seasonally adjusted. Professional and technical services showed increases from March to April 2018. March was 9,138.8, and April was 9,164.6 for an increase of 25.8. Management and technical consulting services grew 2.9 and was 1,435.1 in March and 1,438 in April. Other professional and technical services category was reported at 730.8 in March and 733.4 in April demonstrating an increase of 2.6. Employment services saw an increase of 12.3 from March’s reported 3,700.8 to April’s 3,713.1. Management of companies and enterprises saw a slight increase of .4 from March’s 2,315.2 to April’s 2,315.6. Computer systems design and related services also saw an increase of 6.7. For March this category reported 2,084.6, and April was 2,091.3. However, business support services saw a slight decline of 2.5 from March’s reported figure of 911.2 to April’s 908.7.
The combined data of the ASA Staffing Index and the sector report information from the BLS give insight into the staffing industry and technology sectors at large. This overall viewpoint helps depict trends and what can be expected over the coming months.
